Meet Faith

Faith is currently studying a Bachelor of Communications (Theatre Media), which she started in 2021 and is set to graduate in late 2023.

Have you gained any industry experience?

Studying Communications and Theatre Media has definitely given me the industry experience I wanted, and more!!!!

Since beginning my degree I have; become the Editor of the Charles Sturt Blog, run my own weekly radio show ‘Feministory’, stage-managed numerous dance concerts, interviewed multiple staff members (including the Vice-Chancellor) and was photographed for an ‘Invest in Bathurst’ photoshoot with the Bathurst Regional Council.

This is all off the top of my head!

I did not join this degree thinking I would be doing THIS many amazing things. I am having a lot of fun, and now the issue is that I have to try and figure out what I want to do when I graduate.

Have you enjoyed your degree?

I am currently studying Theatre Media, and to say I have enjoyed it would be an understatement.

After beginning my communications studies in Journalism, I transferred over to Theatre Media in the second session of my first year, after participating in the ‘Bathurst and Theatrical Society’ where I realised I was not in the right specialisation.

A lot of people (specifically TM’s students) told me not to transfer as the course was finishing with my year, and wouldn’t be as fun as it could have been.

I did take their words into consideration, but then I thought, I am absolutely not staying in journalism for any longer than I have to!

I then transferred soon after. Even though I missed out on the initial introduction to TM, I still have gained so many skills in the industry.

What skills have you learnt throughout your degree?

When I started, I had only really had on-stage experience, and I was very nervous to learn the behind-the-scenes.

Not only did I get the chance to work on stage, but I have also worked in costume/set/prop design, written a script, stage managed, bumped in, bumped out and organised a whole event as production manager.

I also did a lot of jobs in the workshop which at the time freaked me out a lot (the idea of it still does to be honest), but I was so proud when I learnt how to properly use a drill and a staple gun.

I also faced my fears in the theatre and climbed up a ladder to adjust the stage curtains. Whilst I really don’t want to do things like that again, I am glad I had the opportunity to give it a go.

Is there anything you are glad to have learnt?

I am so glad to have learned the behind-the-scenes of theatre. It has given me so many skills that I never even realised were involved!!

Whilst I love being on stage, I learnt a few more skills off-stage that are actually quite up my alley.

I learnt how to production manage and stage manage which I found to be very beneficial as I LOVE to be in charge (I don’t think is surprising to anyone).

Overall, so glad I switched over to Theatre Media, even as it’s in its dying days, I wouldn’t change it for the world!
